Earth Day is an annual international awareness day, this year taking place on Saturday 22 April 2023. The day is an annual celebration that honours the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations.

To mark the occasion, Hectare founder and CEO Jamie McInnes has issued a comment highlighting how the date remains an important opportunity for the agricultural industry to consider untapped sustainability measures.

It’s easy to see Earth Day as just another awareness day, but it does mark an important opportunity to think about the positive changes we can make personally, and professionally, to become more sustainable.

Farming as an industry is under constant pressure to become more environmentally friendly. At the same time, it’s being encouraged to produce more for food security, whilst also facing the adverse weather impacts of climate change.

Technology advances have helped farmers make big strides driving sustainability ‘in the field’, but there’s still a big untapped opportunity in the post-production supply chain to drive efficiency, and savings, for farmers and sustainability for farming as a whole. And this is an area where we’ve barely scratched the surface.

Digitising often paper-based processes from farm to factory can have a significant impact on farming sustainability. These range from reducing food miles and stresses on livestock, through to providing better insights to help farmers achieve better prices for sustainably produced crops and buyers buy better.

While Earth Day is just another day in the diary, it’s a great opportunity for farm businesses to revisit the planet and profit opportunity of digitising how they work.
